For the second consecutive night the Notre Dame Hockey team brought back a big win out of Section, defeating a tough Saranac Lake team by a final score of 3-2 on Saturday. “We are thrilled with the two wins,” remarked ND head coach Marc Staley following yesterday’s contest. “These were two very good hockey teams S Lake and Lake Placid) and we wanted to go out of Section in order to test ourselves early in the year, and I’m very happy with the way we responded.”
In particular, Staley was excited about how his team is starting to find different ways to win as the season progresses, along with the continued development of balance throughout their attack on the opposing net.
“We have been dominating people with our power play as of late so to come up here and win two games without receiving one single power play was great,” said the ND head coach, whose team’s opponents went without a penalty through two games this weekend (cough, home job, cough). “We are beginning to get some balanced scoring as Devin Grimshaw and Ryan Antinore were able to find the net for us again. It isn’t just one line like a lot of people think – we had a lot of people contribute up here.”
The night began with a scoreless first period, as each side came out of the locker room with plenty of energy defensively which disallowed any early offense. However, despite the slow start ND’s Devin Grimshaw broke the seal during the second period, as the sophomore found the back of the net for the game’s first goal – with assists going to Dylan D’Alba and Bryan Moscicki.
Shortly after the Grimshaw goal, though, the Irish allowed Saranac Lake to answer as the Red Storm beat Irish goaltender Ethan Conrad for the first time in the game in order to tie the score at 1 a piece – which is where it would sit going into the final period.
During the third, Notre Dame would again score first in order to break the tie.
The go-ahead goal came after sophomore Ethan Hutchins won a tough draw inside the S Lake zone, then slid the puck across the goal crease and onto the stick of Ryan Antinore – who put the puck home in order to retain the advantage for the Irish. Although minutes later, the Red Storm again answered ND with a goal of their own which tied the score at 2 with 4:30 remaining in the game.
But rather than panic, the Irish turned to their leading point scorer on the year Ryan Webster (24 points), who came through with the immediate answer to the S Lake equalizer – giving ND the lead with just minutes to go. The goal came off a solid feed from teammate Cameron Clark, and Henrik Toiviainen, and put the Irish ahead 3-2.
The remainder of the game was in the hands of ND goalie Ethan Conrad, who finished out his 21 save effort in order to preserve the one-goal win.
“Ethan played very well for us again tonight,” said Staley in addition to his previous comments.
As it stands today, ND still has yet to lose a game and will look ahead to Geneva, Rush-Henrietta, Geneseo, and Batavia in their next four games.
“Our next game is against Geneva on Tuesday night and we will be heading back home tomorrow,” concluded Staley.
The Irish are 8-0 now and have outscored their opponents 58-11.
